FAQs
Q. What if I miss the first meeting (or
first few meetings)?
A. You may join MTC any time, and
registration is ongoing so you can begin at any point during our program.
If you do join us late, please email us at
info@movethroughcancer.org
at least 3 days in advance to let us know you will be joining. At your
first meeting, we will meet with you individually to discuss your needs,
abilities, and goals. Most importantly, we will start you at your
current fitness level, not the fitness level of other participants.
Q. I’m currently in treatment. Is it
okay for me to exercise?
A. Absolutely. MoveThroughCancer is a
program for survivors before, during, and after treatment. Starting a
moderate exercise program during treatment is a great way to improve your
quality of life and your survivorship. It can stimulate your immune system
and also counteract many of the negative side effects of cancer treatment
(e.g. fatigue and nausea).
Q. Do I have to be in shape to join
this program?
A. No.
MoveThoughCancer works with survivors of all ages and all fitness levels.
Q. How much does it cost and what is
included in the program?
A. Our training program costs $25 per
12-week session. This fee includes weekly exercise training/educational
classes, a discounted pair of running/walking shoes with personalized fit,
a resistance training band, and discounted race entry to a target event.
Our coaches and staff provide a complete program each week, including
proper techniques for walking and jogging, stretching and yoga, strength
training with resistance bands and exercise balls. Additionally, each week
we’ll discuss a new topic related to fitness and survivorship, such as
nutrition or goal setting.
Q. What if I am unable to participate in
the “target event”?
A. Our
exercise training programs are designed to prepare you for an event (such
as the Race for the Cure and the Relay for Life). They are always fun and
spirited events – a perfect opportunity to show everyone how far you have
come! While we do encourage participation, it is completely voluntary so
by no means are you obligated to attend.
Q. Can I bring a family member or
friend to the classes?
A.
Absolutely. Cancer is a disease that also affects our spouses, children
and friends. We encourage you to bring them along for your benefit, and
for theirs!
Q. What if I miss a class?
A. If you miss the class day/time you
usually attend, you are welcome to attend one of the others scheduled that
week. If you are unable to make any for the week, we will provide you via
email an exercise training schedule and information for the session you
missed.
Q. Can I attend more than one class per
week?
A. Yes. Please come as often as you would
like.
Q. Outside of the weekly classes, what
should I do?
A. You can expect to exercise a minimum
of ten minutes per day outside the weekly classes. The MoveThroughCancer
program will provide you a weekly schedule and log for your activities.
Q. Are there any risks I should know
about?
A. The most important thing is not to
over-exercise. Our coaches and staff will work with you to help you
understand your personal strengths and limitations so that you can reach
your fitness goals, avoid injury and not over-stress your immune system.
Q. What changes can I expect to see?
A. Since
participating in MoveThroughCancer, many of our members are more
energetic, sleep better, have lost weight, and have decreased their
nausea, pain and depression. Most of them have improved their day-to-day
functioning and are more confident in their own abilities.
We look forward to hearing
about the positive changes
YOU experience from our program!
