MoveThroughCancer Spring Session 2008

A program of Cancer Connection

It’s time to get moving again! Cancer Connection’s new MoveThroughCancer program will now offer a free physical activity group to get you moving and improve your survivorship. No matter what your fitness level, we’ll provide a safe opportunity to bring movement into your everyday life. MoveThroughCancer members—old and new—are invited to join us for the new complimentary sessions.

Starting on Saturday, March 29th, 2008, the new MoveThroughCancer group will meet at RunTex and walk on the Lady Bird Johnson Lake Trail. Our free, weekly Walk-and-Talk groups combine the benefits of exercise and social interaction. The group will be a guided program for all fitness levels and can help you incorporate exercise into your personal lifestyle. This ongoing group will be enhanced during the year with speakers, community events and learning opportunities to improve survivorship—including yoga, nutrition and emotional support.

The new MoveThroughCancer Walk-and-Talk Group:

  • Who: Survivors of all ages, as well as, types and stages of cancer
  • What: Activity group for cancer survivors, friends and family
    • Participants should be able to walk for15-20 minutes (if you are not able to do this, please contact us for more information about other opportunities).
  • Where: RunTex Annex (corner of Riverside and South 1st St. The annex building is on the north side of the parking lot.) www.RunTex.com
  • When: Saturday mornings from 9:30am – 10:30am
    • Times will change slightly each season to help you stay cool or warm!
  • Why: To give you more energy, regain your fitness, balance and health, help prevent secondary cancers, make friends, feel more in control of your life and improve your survivorship!

Whether you are a runner or walker, a talker or a listener, your experiences as a cancer survivor, family member or friend brings new experiences to our group—new jokes, new advice, and, even new moves. Please join us! For more information, please contact Emmett Skiles at (512) 342-0233, or e-mail info@thecancerconnection.org or view additional information at www.thecancerconnection.org, and www.movethroughcancer.org.

“I am thrilled to announce a new era of MoveThroughCancer. As part of our new partnership with Cancer Connection, our exercise and activity programs will resume at RunTex on Lady Bird Lake this month.  Our same coaches and programming staff are still involved, and we all look forward to seeing you and your co-survivors on the trail again soon.

Several hundred survivors have already benefited from the MoveThroughCancer programs and we look forward to hundreds more joining us! Remember that whatever your current fitness level, we welcome your participation. Any step with MoveThroughCancer will be a step in the right direction. Let's share it together. I have missed seeing many of you and look forward to more good times on the trail!”

Physical activity counteracts many of the negative effects of cancer (both physical and psychological). It plays an important role in preventing other diseases, and may prevent the recurrence of some cancers.

MoveThroughCancer welcomes survivors of all ages, all types of cancers, and all fitness levels. Our programs meet once per week and for an activity session and educational seminar. Participants also receive a daily training guide and log to track progress during the rest of the week.

Our programs are developed with input and review from a team of experts including oncologists, exercise physiologists, sports medicine specialists, physical therapists, researchers, cancer survivors, and coaches. The model is based on current research information and shared experiences, and can be tailored for your individual needs- before during or after treatment.

Bring your completed registration form along with the program fee to any class, and begin your fitness program with MTC!
